Being a global citizen is not just about traveling the world, but about giving back to the communities that you visit. Whenever I travel, I always try to eat and stay at local establishments. I also use local public transportation as opposed to corporate shuttle buses. However, the biggest way that I give back is through micro lending. Through Kiva, I can provide microloans to various entrepreneurs in countries around the world. Unlike traditional donating, where you don't know where your money ends up, you slowly get your money back through the life of a Kiva loan. Once you receive your money, you can use it to donate to more causes. So far, I have used my initial $430 USD investment to contribute over $2575 USD to projects in 53 countries. Below, I have listed the specific projects (descriptions are directly from the Kiva website) that I have contributed to as well as the status of the loan.
If interested in giving back, you can register for a Kiva account by clicking here.
