Juan's Guesthouse (Caye Caulker, Belize)
Booked this property last minute....should have stayed in a hotel. Was extremely dirty and had limited facilities. Juan was friendly but that didn't make up for many deficiencies. It was co-ed which could be uncomfortable for some.

A Piece of Ground (Punta Gorda, Belize)
An excellent hostile with comfortable facilities. It utilizes the pod system so you have privacy even when sharing the room with other people. Unfortunately there isn't much going on in Punta Gorda itself and most people stay at this hostel in route to crossing the border into Honduras.

Underwhelming considering the steep price tag in relation to other accommodation in the area. Hotel does deliver on the basics. It is also extremely secure. There is a petting zoo, club, and several restaurants on property.

Hotel El Campin (Bogota, Colombia)
Solid hotel right outside of the touristy Chapinero neighborhood of Bogota. The rooms did not have an air conditioner or fan but were decent enough for the price ($20 USD per night). Is not located near many of the tourist attractions but is close enough that you can get to them easily and cheaply. Would consider staying again for right price.

Hotel Medellin Gold (Medellin, Colombia)
Considering the deal I got for this place ($98 for 7 nights), this is the best place I've stayed so far in all of my travels. To describe it in American terms, its a Marriott hotel at a Motel 6 price. The amenities are top notch and it is literally located a block from several bars, clubs, and restaurants. It is also a short cab ride away from Medellin's main tourist section, El Poblado.

Hotel G Cartagena (Cartagena, Colombia)
This place is like a siren in Greek mythology as its easy to get seduced by the low price and pretty pictures if you book through the internet. However, if you aren't careful you will crash and burn like I did. This hotel is clean but is located in the slums of the city far from any of the tourist attractions. The worse part is the WiFi connection doesn't work in the room so you have to go into the hallway when booking another hotel.

Hotel Stil Cartagena (Cartagena, Colombia)
This is an average hotel with a great location. Cartagena is one of Colombia's more expensive cities so if you want luxury you will pay first world prices. This place is a budget option that takes care of the basics and not much else. It does serve as an excellent base to explore Cartagena's historic sites. Would only recommend for budget travelers who don't want to stay in a crowded hostel.

Drop Bear Hostel (Santa Marta, Colombia)
In a town full of 5-star beach resorts, this place definitely stands above the rest when it comes to budget accommodation. I paid hostel prices for suite accommodation. Even as a hostel, this place had plenty to do (pool, bar, several televisions). I immediately received an upgraded room once confronted with maintenance issues. This is a great place to stay whether you are a backpacker or more sophisticated traveler.

Ayenda 1302 Sorrento (Barranquilla, Colombia)
It was a nice hotel with a great breakfast. The room was basically an apartment. I had issues with the Wi-fi throughout my stay due to "electrical" problems which really put a damper on my experience. There wasn't much to do in the immediate neighborhood although there were some great food carts which were relatively cheap.

Don't be fooled by the rough exterior. I had the most comfortable sleep at this hotel that I had throughout my travels in Colombia. The room is nice and comfortable. Hotel San Jose (Ipiales, Colombia)
It is a basic hotel that is a little more expensive than others in the area ($16 USD per night). However, its location and ability to take credit card as payment are worth the extra few dollars. It is literally 100 feet from the bus terminal. The hotel's purpose is to provide a resting place to those crossing over the border. I highly recommend staying here right before you cross over into Ecuador. If you are coming into Colombia, it is better to take the 3 hour bus ride to Pasto.

Capital Hostel de Cuidad (San Jose, Costa Rica)
Great hostel located near the National Football Stadium......used pod system which allowed for everything to be located in your own personal space (i.e. outlet, fan, light). The owner was also really accommodating. The only issue was that there didn't seem to be much in the immediate area to do however was located 100m from a bus stop.

Selina La Fortuna (La Fortuna, Costa Rica)
Solid hostel in La Fortuna. Is part of a franchise that has hostels throughout Costa Rica. It is centrally located only blocks from the bus stop. The only complaint was there was only one fan in my room and it's location was horrible in that it was too cold for some while others such as myself were pretty hot during the night. Public transportation is non existent in La Fortuna in that it will cost a good bit of $$ to do various activities in the city if you don't have a car.

Pura Vida Hostel (Tamarindo, Costa Rica)
To be honest, my first instinct upon arrival was to find another hostel because of the location (far from beach). HOWEVER, I am so glad I stayed because Thomas went above and beyond to make it feel like home during the holidays. He literally bought a pig and roasted it for the guests for Xmas. While it isn't the most modern, I guarantee that this place will provide you with the best memories.

Manuel Antonio Hostel Resort (Manuel Antonio, Costa Rica)
A nice hostel if you plan on making a quick trip to MA. If you plan on staying more than two days then go elsewhere. Has all basic amenities but the location is horrible in than you have to take a bus to either Quepos or MA to buy anything outside of their overpriced water bottles. Lacks the hostel atmosphere in that it tends to cater more towards the local crowd and will probably need to speak Spanish to socialize. It's not a bad place by any means but there are better choices in the area.

Fauna Luxury Hostel (San Jose, Costa Rica)
Great comfortable hostel in it almost feels like a hotel. Uses the pod system so you have your own personal space. It also has nice bathrooms and storage lockers. Great for extended stay in San Jose.....the problem is there is little to do in the city and this place is located pretty far from both the bus stations and airports. While Escazu is pretty high end and safe, the location can be inconvenient for traditional backpackers. The nonrefundable rates are also a hassle if plans change.

Playa 506 (Puerto Viejo, Costa Rica)
Similar to Puerto Viejo, decent but disappointing considering the cost. Great breakfast and cool staff. It also has direct beach access, although its a surfers beach rather than a swimmers. The Wi-Fi was unreliable due to the sharing of data amongst all guest. However, the worse thing about this place is the location. It is 2km from the town and buses do not run frequently forcing you to either walk or rent a bike for $10 a day.

Santo Domingo Bed and Breakfast (Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic)
I booked a private room for that was advertised for $20 a night. However, what is not accounted for is the insane amount of tax that you have to pay so it ended up being around $27 per night. I stayed for 5 days and was overall satisfied with the hotel. The Wi-Fi was excellent and the owner was cool. In addition the location is ideal as it is right next to Zona Colonial. The rooms were clean and comfortable considering the price. Sometimes other guests can be noisy. Neighbors also blast music.

La Rancheta (Las Galeras, Dominican Republic)
If I had to rate solely on the owners, I would give this place an 11 out of 10. The "room" was a house with a full kitchen (outside) and a private bathroom. The breakfast was also delicious and gigantic making well worth the $5 USD price. This hotel does have a few issues due to being in Las Galeras. Its about 2km from town making it hard for anyone without a car to go back and forth. The Wi-Fi was unreliable and only worked in common area. The water pressure in shower was weak and water was cold.

Don't be fooled by the glamorous pictures, this place is a dump. It is far from the beach and the part of town it is located is extremely sketchy. The outlets don't work unless the light is on so no charging your cell phone while you sleep. On a positive note, the showers (in the king rooms) are pretty solid. The location is good for practical purposes as it is next to the bus station, two gyms, and a internet café.

Part of a complex with four different hotels that have a slight variation in each of their names. You pay for a room inside of an apartment with a full kitchen that has two other rooms. It is run by an American guy and his wife who both speak great English. It is located a short walk from the beach and has adequate facilities. My only complaint is that you have to catch a bus or moto to get to the nearest market.

Initially could not find it on Google Maps because I booked under a different name (Hostal El Rustico). However, it is located right in the heart of Otavalo and is clean and comfortable with highspeed Wi-Fi. While a little more expensive then other surrounding options, I moved to this hotel because it was one of the few that accepted credit card. Not that impressive on its face as rooms are small and facilities are dated. However, it ended up being great value as I got an off-peak rate. Comfortable hotel located a few blocks from the city's central park. Also within walking distance to many restaurants and shops. It is so secure that I was given FOUR different sets of keys to get into my room. Bed isn't the most comfortable I've slept in but I have also slept on worse during this trip. Additionally, the owner and his family were very friendly and accommodating. I would recommend staying here if passing through Banos.

Hotel Bonanza (Guayaquil, Ecuador)
Standard hotel albeit a little overpriced compared to similar ones found throughout the country. It was very modern and located next to the central plaza and boardwalk. The owners were super paranoid about security and it was annoying that I had to find the owner every time I wanted to come and go so that they could physically let me in and out. The internet was also hit or miss on some occasions. I would probably stay again only if I could get a really cheap rate.

Arena Blanca Hotel (Salinas, Ecuador)
I actually stumbled upon this place after cancelling my original hotel reservation made through Booking.com. While a little more expensive, it checked all the boxes. It was very modern, close to the beach, had very fast internet and hot showers. It is also attached to the only modern supermarket in the town. It is the kind of place that I could rent long-term if given a good enough deal.

Bamboo By the Beach (Montañita, Ecuador)
An absolute steal for $10 per night, especially in an expensive town like Montañita. It is run by an American expat. I was provided an ocean view room with a patio. The room also had a comfortable bed, decent Wi-fi, a hot shower, and air conditioning. If you see this place on Booking.com, reserve it immediately because it probably won't open for long.

Hostal Malania (Manta, Ecuador)
Facility-wise is probably one of the best hotels that I stayed in during my travels through Ecuador. However, the location is horrible as it almost feels like its in another town. While the hotel is along a major bus route, you have to take the bus just to get to the nearest store and it takes about 35 minutes to get to the beaches in Manta. The location would be more bearable if there were at least some good restaurants within walking distances. If you just need a place to stay and don't care about going to the beach then this is a good option.

Ohana Suites (Manta, Ecuador)
This place received high marks on Booking.com and deservedly so. I was fortunate to get a deal for half of the regular rate. While not on the beach, my room had a nice balcony with an ocean view. The facilities were great and the young lady on staff was friendly and helpful. My one issue was the location. While it was within walking distance of a modern shopping center, getting to the main beach could be a hassle using public bus because of layout of the route. However, those that usually can afford to stay here would have no issue with a $1.50 one way cab fare.

Hotel Sander (Guayaquil, Ecuador)
Was the second best hotel that I stayed in while in Guayaquil (I only stayed in two). The word I would use to describe this place is "meh" in that it has everything you would expect but still feels pretty run-down. It was also more expensive than other hotels that I stayed in which made my experience more disappointing. The best part about this place was the location as it was a block from the central plaza and a 10 minute walk from the Malecon (the city's main attraction). There were also plenty of stores and restaurants within walking distance which was very convenient. All things considered, I wouldn't stay here again though.

Hostel Casa Verde (Santa Ana, El Salvador)
The best hostel I've stayed in while traveling Central America. While it does the big things well (Wi-Fi, cleanliness, location, price), it also excels at the small things. Even though you sleep in a 6 bed dorm, you feel as if you have your own space with a night table and fan per bed. In addition, there are even boxes to put you smelly shoes after a long day of hike. There is not much to do in Santa Ana, but I think this place would serve an excellent base for those exploring western El Salvador.

Tequila Sunrise (Guatemala City, Guatemala)
There is one word to describe this place........adequate. It does the job as far as providing a semi-comfortable bed for a reasonable price and good showers however.....I would only stay at this place as stopover to and from the airport. While the neighborhood itself is reasonably safe (by GC standards), there really isn't much going on in the immediate area for food or fun. Also the dorm seemed cramped which was magnified by no A.C. in the room.

Hotel El Pescador (Puerto Vallarta, Mexico)
Excellent centralized location right on the beach and access to a private pool. The amenities are nothing special when compared to other inclusive resorts in Puerto Vallarta but they are comfortable enough to justify the price. All rooms have a balcony with a great Oceanview. I was also provided a voucher for breakfast during 5 of my 7 day stay. My favorite part was being able to listen to the waves crashing onto the shore as I drifted off to sleep at night.

Nice rustic hotel located along Tulum's coast. Included simple breakfast and access to private beach area (as pictured). Additionally, the bed was comfortable and Wi-Fi was fairly strong. Not in the greatest neighborhood in Panama City but is within walking distance of a centralized boardwalk with local and western restaurants alike. Mantu Boutique (Aguas Calientes, Peru)
It is a very basic hotel that fits the goal of having a place to sleep prior to visiting Machu Picchu. The two main complaints that I had were that there were times were no one was at the front desk and I worried about leaving my room key there when I went out and the Wi-Fi was very inconsistent. On the other hand, it is right in the center of the town, the hotel breakfast was pretty good and the owner allowed me to stay for half a day whilst I waited to catch an afternoon train.

Hotel Mayu Wasi (Cusco, Peru)
I would say this is one of the worst hotels I've stayed in during my travels. First, it is located so high on a hill that taxis can't even get to the door and you are left climbing several stairs with your luggage. There are also no signs which point to the hotel so I was both tired AND lost upon arrival. The room looked nothing like the online pictures and was average at best. I also had to unplug the TV just to charge my laptop. Finally, there is no heater so you will likely be frozen by the time you wake up. Take my advice and find another hotel if you decide to visit Cusco.

Larq'a Park Rooms (Lima, Peru)
Felt more like an Airbnb than an actual hotel but the facilities were adequate. The hotel was difficult to find initially as there is no outside sign advertising the hotel. I was also pretty disappointed that they stopped serving breakfast due to COVID. Despite my complaints, the owner seemed pretty relaxed and the hotel was in a great location in the center of Miraflores, Lima's most affluent district. My decision not to return has more to do with my personal preferences than the quality of the hotel.

Stayed at this place as a quick stop over after arriving to Puerto Rico late. With that being said, it wasn't as bad as Juan's Guesthouse in Belize, but it was pretty damn close. Conturce Hostel (San Juan, Puerto Rico)
Can be a little pricey for those on a shoestring budget but more than makes up for it in value. Is in a prime location steps away from the beach, restaurants, and up-scale Condado. Because of its price, it is not the first choice for budget backpackers increasing the likelihood that you will have the dorm to yourself as I did during my three night stay. It should be noted that this is NOT a party hostel and quiet hours are strictly enforced.

Hotel ActaCity47 (Barcelona, Spain)
Excellent location right next to the Barcelona-Sants train station and metro stop which allows for easy access to both Sagrada Familia and La Rambla. I thought the room and bed were comfortable despite being fairly small. My only major complaint was that the walls were paper thin and I could hear the guests next to me coming in and out of their room. I would recommend staying at this hotel if visiting Barcelona.

Ayre Gran Hotel (Madrid, Spain)
Not sure I agree with its billing as a 4-star hotel but solid nonetheless. Instead of a queen size bed, they had two twin beds pushed together which was uncomfortable at times. The hotel has a nice little gym that allows for simple workouts. While technically close to El Parque de El Retiro, it still is quite a walk uphill to get to the heart of it. Getting to Madrid's tourist center also takes two metro transfers. Would only recommend if you can get a really good deal.

ILUNION Atrium (Madrid, Spain)
An upgraded version of the ILUNION Valencia 3 which caters to high-end business travelers. The amenities were so nice that I felt like I should have paid much more than I did for my three night stay. The only downside is this hotel is located closer to the airport than to Parque de El Retiro. The only interesting place in the area is an upscale mall that is within walking distance of the hotel which has a supermarket and a few high-end restaurants. If your goal is to partake in Madrid's cultural and touristic experiences, I would look for a hotel closer to the central area. However, this is a perfect place to stay if you need to catch an early flight.

ILUNION Valencia 3 (Valencia, Spain)
Excellent hotel with modern facilities to include a private gym with new equipment. In addition, the bed was comfortable and the shower was hot. It is located in one of the newer neighborhoods in Valencia so there are plenty of restaurants and shops around. My only issue is that this hotel seems to be pretty far from both the beach area and the historical center, however, it is also conveniently located next several public transportation options. Would highly recommend to stay if coming to Valencia. (Note: Be careful not to confuse this hotel with the ILUNION Aqua 3 which is located by Valencia's Science and Art Museum.)

Bangkok Centre Hotel (Bangkok, Thailand)
A modern and upscale hotel by Thai standards, however, it is very basic when you apply the Western standard. It does have an excellent location as it is located right off the metro line and only a short tuk-tuk ride away from many temples including Wat Pho and the Grand Palace.
